According to a study from the University of Manchester, lip size is insignificant when it comes to perception of attractiveness; colour is what matters most. Scientists tracked the eye movements of 50 men and found that they spent 2.2 seconds on lipstick-free mouths, 6.7 seconds on pink lips, and 7.3 seconds looking at red lips (regardless of fullness).
For those who, like our beauty writers, pledge allegiance to red lips, read on to find out what makes the cut onto the honour roll.
Arguably the best red I’ve tried: It isn’t too orangey and the color is a little darker than your classic red, which gives it a chic, not too vampy vibe.

What I love about this tube is its packaging–you “click” it open by pressing on a gold rose. That extra touch just makes me feel even more fancy applying it. The glossy, moisturizing finish is also a welcome break from my go-to mattes. And the colour really makes my lips pop!

It’s the first red lipstick I ever fell in love with, and the easiest go-to for me. What I also love is the long staying power. The colour is bright yet not too fluorescent to cast a deathly sheen on my skin tone, so it works for most skin types including Asian skins.

This is such a cult classic that I’m pretty sure you already have one of this in your vanity cupboard. Whatever. It’s a thick pencil which means I can actually draw it on precisely, instead of swiping it over my lips and wiping off excess at the corners. Plus, it really stays on, and I’ve found the red a perfect in-between of blue and orange undertones, so I can wear it year round when my skin undergoes its various UV-induced metamorphosis.

Winner of Allure Beauty Awards 2016. It isn’t just the classic iconic red colour that swayed me but its smooth creamy texture that settles beautifully on my lips. Lasts all day and only requires small touch ups after food. Godsend!

OK, I’ll admit it. I fell in love with this for the uber sexy pavkaging, but who wouldn’t? This is the sort of thing you would love to whip out in front of your hot date and seductively apply your lipstick with. Oh, and the matte colour is just so gorgeous and mysterious for a night out…
